Q & A with Andy from The Secure Dad

When did you start podcasting?

The first episode of The Secure Dad Podcast aired in October of 2018. I launched 3 episodes together to help generate an audience. Then I moved to two shows a week for about a month and then finally to a weekly show. I’ve been going for almost a year now and am nominated for the 14th Annual Podcast Awards!

Why did you start podcasting?

I started a podcast because I felt it was the natural progression of The Secure Dad. I started out as a blog, then to a book on home security. But I knew there was a better way to reach families besides the written word. So after some prodding by my friends and family I set out to start a podcast. And it has been a great decision! With a history in radio, it wasn’t hard to get started.

What’s the name of your show and what is it about?

The Secure Dad Podcast helps families live safer, happier lives.

I want every family to not just feel safe at home in and public but to actually be safe in those areas.

I was in high school when the tragedy at Columbine High School happened. While I was thousands of miles away, it changed my life.

When I went back to school the next day, I realized that my safety was my own responsibility. And that’s a wake up call for most people!

Ever since then I’ve worked to keep myself and my family safe. Then I realized that I could share my thoughts, experiences and research with other families.

Whether we realize it or not the key to our happiness is security. When we are safe then we can be happy. We are not secure in our home or our environment we spend our energy on survival.

When those things are taken care of, then we can focus on happiness. So security and happiness go hand in hand.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

I started my career in radio back in the mid 90s so I’m used to a lot of gear. But when I started my research I found that there was a lot of great software that will help you cut costs and clutter on your desk.

I use a Blue Snowball “Black Ice” microphone with a simple pop screen and swing arm. I’m a Mac guy so I’m recording and editing in GarageBand.

From my audio experience I know there’s a lot better stuff you can buy, but I get great feedback on how my show sounds. People tell me it sounds professional and that’s the best compliment I can get.

Currently I’m in the running for the 14th Annual Podcast Awards, so I must be doing a few things right!

But I can’t do anything without Libsyn. I’m continually impressed with all the tools I get for so little a month. It’s a fantastic value.

Upgrading to a tier with the advanced stats is essential to understanding your audience and trends. I’m always telling people to make sure they sign up for tier with that feature because it takes a lot of the guesswork out of your podcast.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I’ve tried to promote The Secure Dad Podcast a bunch of different ways. A lot of new podcasters jump right to Facebook and Instagram ads.

I’ve found that those don’t always bring about the best results. If you can use Libsyn stats to discover your markets, then you might can target an IG ad for a specific area.

Then link that ad to your iTunes listing to encourage podcast subscriptions.

What launched my podcast numbers was a simple tactic that I learned from Pat Flynn: be a guest on someone’s show.

Pat is totally right. The best way to gain more listeners is to go where they are and that’s podcasts! It’s so simple, but it’s true.

And there’s this “strange” thing with podcasters, we like to help each other out. I’ve helped promote other shows because I feel they are right for my listeners. Other hosts have done the same for me. We’re all in this thing together!

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

When I started out I read a lot about download stats and how that drives your podcast. But everyone says not to worry about numbers in the beginning.

But I did worry about the numbers, I still do sometimes! But you as a independent, start-up CAN NOT compare your numbers to mega hits like The Joe Rogan Experience. So when you start out don’t look at the numbers, look at the trends.

Are you going up, down or staying even? The podcast journey is different for everyone, so don’t sweat it.
