Q & A with Trey Downes from Your Superior Self

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting in October 2017. I didn’t officially release until my son’s and mother in law’s birthday on April 16, 2018.

Why did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting because of two reasons.

First, I have been on a self-betterment mission. Two years ago I converted to Catholicism. I never thought I could do it.

That sparked me to start finding other things in my life to tackle and improve upon. First it was investing, basic stuff like stocks and bonds.

Then it was the best way to invest in my 401k. Then it was my biggest area of concern. Communicating. I have always had this fear of speaking, not only in large public arenas but in small settings as well.

I get very flustered and uncomfortable when giving presentations and when speaking on conference calls, so one day I had enough and decided I had to tackle this hurdle. This is me doing that.

Secondly, I have a very blue collar background. I grew up on a very small farm town and followed my father and grandfathers footsteps in the railroad industry.

On my journey throughout my career, I’ve meet tremendous and very talented blue collar workers, who quite honestly, could have done so much more.

I know for a fact there are many blue collar workers out there that are like me, hungry to go out and create their own success. The podcast allows me to do that as well.

What’s the name of your show about and what is it about?

The name of my podcast is Your Superior Self: after the Ernest Hemingway Quote (my fav. Author)

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”

It’s a podcast about waking up the blue collar nation and helping them realize their potential for success. I hold conversations with role models who have demonstrated their own version of success, as well as review books, and hold Q/A’s from the audience.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

2100 ATR mics recorded through Garageband. Interviews are done via Skype and recorded with eCamm call recorder.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I have promoted my podcast through social platforms mostly: Twitter and Facebook. I have had three articles written in the local papers.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I am still fairly new at podcasting, but If I could give myself a heads up, I would tell myself to start sooner.

Don’t delay launching because of the fear that people will judge your movement. People won’t always get what you’re trying to do, because it’s change. People are mostly afraid of change.

I also am obsessed with increasing my leadership qualities. True leadership is making yourself vulnerable so that others may learn.
