Q & A with DJ Klyph of Klyph Notes
When did you start podcasting?
In August of 2014 I recorded the first episode of what was initially called DJ Klyph presents…
Why did you start podcasting?
I’ve been hosting a local Portland Or. based radio show Welcome to the Neighborhood since 2009 and occasionally after the broadcast, I’d spend up to an hour in conversation with the guests.
I felt a portion of my audience would dig hearing these behind the scenes stories and get to know more about the artists. Podcasting seemed like a good way to capture those conversations and share them with an even larger audience.
What’s the name of your show and what is it about?
The name of my show is “Klyph Notes”. It’s an extension of the WTTN radio show, minus the music.
I get to use this platform to allow artists to tell stories like the history of the Portland Hip-Hop scene, the concepts behind their projects, promote themselves and events. I’ve had record label owners, writers, activists…It’s been a great way to build and serve the community.
What’s you podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
I have a couple of options based on artist availability. The primary set up I use is a couple of Sure SMB7 microphones with wind screens into a MOTU ULTRAlite Mk3.
I record directly into Logic Pro X on a Mid 2015 MacBook Pro.
On the road for quick & easy capture I use a Zoom H5 with on-board mic with the occasional addition of classic AKG D320 B hand held microphones or I swap out to the onboard SSH–6 shotgun mic.
I take that audio and upload into Logic to edit and bounce to MP3. At home, I use a Rode NT1000 with a pop filter into the ULTRAlite Mk3
How have you promoted your podcast?
I use social media quite a bit. Primarily Instagram which I link to my twitter and Facebook. I use my website as well. I also have an ad in a local music magazine in Portland that serves the dual purpose of podcast promotion and support of the scene.
What do you know now that you wish you new when you started?
With the growing interest in a number of podcasts starting every day, I am constantly learning new concepts and ways to connect with and build listenership.
I don’t know if there is any one thing I wish I knew, but I’m grateful for the Libsyn community and glad to be a part of it.
