Q & A with Karen from Project Management Insights

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting after returning from Social Media Marketing World in 2015.

I heard from podcasters there about how podcasts engage audiences and thought, why not give it a go.

Why did you start podcasting?

I had an audience on my blog and I thought about who they were, Project Managers who are usually strapped for time.

It made sense to put my words into audio format so they could listen to it on the run.

I could see these busy PM’s listening to my podcast on their way to and from work. Learning whilst on their commute.

What’s your show about?

My show is about how to be a successful Project Manager.

It focuses on the things that you aren’t taught in your PM training; what’s worked for me in managing risks, pieces about business case writing, lots on communication and leadership. It is focused on the people side of Project Management.

And it is also for people who manage many tasks and don’t have formal project management training.

These people are often not considered “Project Managers” because they haven’t completed formal training.

It is where my skills developed, BEFORE I did any formal project management training.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

My setup is very simple.

I have a Rode Lapel Microphone and my iPhone with the Rode App on it.

That’s it.

I record my podcasts wherever I am in the quietest spot possible.

I then use Audacity to do the editing work. When that’s done I upload my file straight onto Libsyn.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I have the episodes available via my website and add links into my monthly newsletter.

New episodes are added automatically to my Facebook Page and Twitter feed, as well as the YouTube channel.

I haven’t done a lot of other promotion for my podcast yet and was surprised to find that I have over 800 followers on Podcast Addict.

The podcast is available on iTunes and Stitcher Radio too.

Most listeners take my iTunes feed via Libsyn.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I new how easy it was to get started. I would have done it years ago. I wish that I’d understood how simple it is to edit an audio file.

I waited for help with the editing, and it’s really easy once you know how. I would say to anyone wanting to start, go for it.

It really isn’t hard and with these few simple tools you can create a great podcast that people will listen to.
