Q & A’s with Marion from The Spartan Up Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

Our first episode aired January 2015!

Why did you start podcasting?

Our show host Joe De Sena was publishing his first book “Spartan UP!” and he was interviewed by several podcasts.

As he traveled to promote the book people started to come up to him saying they recognized his voice from the interviews. That’s when we decided we needed to start our own show.

What’s your show about?

Our show is hosted by Joe De Sena, he’s the founder and CEO of Spartan Race and an accomplished Ultra and Endurance racer and businessman.

Every week we publish a new interview with someone who is a high achiever in some area (entrepreneurs, adventurers, authors, artists, athletes, professors, chefs, moms & monks) and find out what attributes and practices got them there.

We talk a lot about grit and resilience, but lots of other things too.  At the end of each episode our panel of 4 co-hosts talk about the lessons we can take away from that guest.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

We conduct all of our interviews in person, and all are videotaped for our YouTube channel too.

So for the interviews we usually use a pair of Senheiser wireless lavalier mics, when we add a 3rd guest or have wireless interference we use a Senheiser shotgun mic..

For the panel we have four Audio Technica mics on stands running into a Zoom recorder.

How have you promoted your podcast?

We have dedicated Twitter and Instagram channels, and we sometimes make posts on the main Spartan Race Facebook page.

Our host also writes articles based on the lessons he learns from interviews that are published in Inc, Entrepreneur, on our blog and our Medium magazine “Spartan LIFE.”

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

My background was video production, so handling the production was not that hard.

The hosts and I have all been learning the rest as we go and that’s been a fun process. So I don’t think there’s anything I WISH I’d known, but there was a lot we DIDN’T know.
