Q & A with Christian from The Rock N Roll Archeology Project

When did you start podcasting?

We launched the project in November of 2015, but we had been working to put it together for almost a year.  Our project is a vast subject and we wanted to prepare our research for the main narrative, and lay the foundation for our other shows associated with the project.

Why did you start podcasting?

I’ve been a podcast listener for many years and love the format, especially the produced “theater of the mind” type!

When I first conceived the Rock N Roll Archaeology Project, I first thought of it of as a podcast, with the potential to be transposed to other media in the future.  I felt podcasting was an excellent “low barrier to entry” format to produce the concept, prove it worked and to build a portable audience.

What’s your show about?

The Rock N Roll Archaeology Project is about the latter half of the 20th century through the lens of Rock N Roll.  We take music, culture and technology and discuss the feedback loops created and how they drastically changed our world.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

I use a Heil PR40 microphone, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 external sound card & Adobe Audition CC for recording & editing.  There is a bit of production to our show, so after everything is assembled, I work with a professional audio engineer to master before the release of each episode.

What have you done to promote your podcast?

We have beat the drums on subscribing, rating and reviewing, run FB promoted posts & ads, A Twitter promoted post or 2 and the rest has been organic word of mouth.

Once we settle on a sponsor or 2 – we will focus on more contests, giveaways and promotions to engage the listeners.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Well first, I think I got lucky by picking a subject that I was both passionate and educated about!  That got me a long way! And since I’m a musician, I was pretty familiar with the hardware and software needed for start-up.

Growing an audience from the ground up and learning the in’s and out’s of podcast services took time and effort, but certainly Libsyn has been a great resource.  Being a data hound, I was excited to watch our growth on a daily basis using the Libsyn tools.

If I had one wish, it would be that I could put out a show every day!  But I’ve now assembled the beginnings of a team around me and we might get to that in the not too distant future.  We’ve been lucky in that all of our reviews have been stellar, but that also creates more demand for our content.  I should’ve had five shows ready from the get go!

Love Rock N Roll? Wanna dive deep into the subtleties, the stories, the ideas, the music and everything in between? Then you really must subscribe to the Rock N Roll Archeology Project!
