Q & A with Brad from Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System
When did you start podcasting?
I started a weekday solo ‘trial run’ in January 2015, and ran it for about 80 episodes. I then re-launched in-depth episodes with a guest on December 19th, 2016.
Why did you start podcasting?
I consume aviation podcasts as fast as they come out, but could not find the exact content I was looking for.
I decided that it was a niche that needed to be filled and no one else was going to do it.
What’s your show about?
Canadian Civil Aviation Daily, examines reported aviation incidents so that pilots, mechanics, and air traffic service personnel can learn more from them than by just reviewing them in a list.
I feature a different Canadian airport each episode, and interview a guest about incidents that have occurred there. These are most often not accidents, but occurrences where there was an elevated risk to safety.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
Mostly double-enders but sometimes over Skype or two microphones at my end.
At my end, a cheap Sure microphone on a good boom stand, a Zoom H4N recorder, and on episodes for release beginning June 2016 a Mackie 402VLX4 (for the microphone preamps).
Editing is on Audacity for Windows. Compression, leveling , and noise reduction all done via the free Auphonic service.
Guests who run double-enders are using condenser microphones directly into Audacity or Sony Catalyst, shipped to me as .wav files.
How have you promoted your podcast?
I’ve set up a page on Facebook and a Twitter account, and just publish episode notifications there.
The only other promotion is a courtesy email to anyone whom I can identify that may have been involved in any of the incidents in the episode.
One has come forward and contributed to the podcast as a guest.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
To slow down and make a good effort at the start, and worry less about getting enough episodes out.
Relevant content is the most important thing to my audience, and has the biggest impact on the enjoyment I get out of it.
