Q & A with D. Louis from Science Fiction Film Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting about a year-and-a-half ago, but at the end of June I closed my old feed to focus my rebranding efforts on my current show, “The Science Fiction Film Podcast.”

Why did you start podcasting?

I started podcasting because I am obsessed with podcasts. I listen to about 30 shows.

I love expressing my ideas and opinions, and after realizing that speaking came easier to me than writing — I decided to take the plunge.

It seemed like a great outlook to create a place where I could (and hopefully fans could) share in our love of the genre.

What’s your show about?

My show is about science fiction film.

We also cover “The Walking Dead” and “A Game of Thrones” and sometimes do top–5 types of episodes that are in the genre.

I have listened to a lot of tv & film podcasts, and really wanted to hear something where people spoke openly and authentically, while still maintaining a good analysis of the material.

I didn’t want to have a stuffy and censored show, but I also didn’t want to have a adolescent show either. I basically wanted to be the Joe Rogan of tv and film.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Hardware has really changed over time.

I use a Heil-PR40, a Mackie 8 track mixer, a vocal compressor, Adobe Audition, and a soundboard on a Mac Book connected to the mixer for sound/clip drops. When I started I used a cheap USB mic and Garage Band.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I promote by word of mouth, social media, and fan engagement.

I really loved the idea of making our fans part of the show.

We routinely have polls that allow the fans to dictate what we cover in the genre.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Don’t be too creative with your show name. Understand that nobody cares who you are — only what you can offer them. What will tempt them to click play. The caring comes after you establish trust.
