Q & A with Chris Squyres from What About Pod

When did you start podcasting?

What About Pod? was conceptualized in 2012, but we didn’t record and publish our first episode until April of 2013.

Why did you start podcasting?

The three of us all have tried stand-up comedy to some degree, with Chris Ricciardi still actively “in the business”. Chris Squyres and Producer Jay  both have varying degrees of radio chops, as well.

I think we all have a creative, comedic side that naturally lends itself to the captive audience only a podcast can provide.

What’s your show about?

We’re an emotional podcast with some deep seeded comedy issues.

But seriously, we have a lot of quick moving segments, most of our core is making fun of the less serious side of news and hot topics, with some stories and games mixed in.

If you’re not “into” one of our shows, just wait five minutes. We’ll dive into a different segment, and likely go off on a funny, entertaining tangent or two.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

What week is it?

This has varied a lot since day 1.

Right now we run 3 laptops, 3 MXL 910 mics, and a Behringer XENYX X1204USB board. We record in Audacity, generally editing with Adobe Audition, and manage most/all of our content via the wonderful folks at Libsyn!

Hopefully we’re done purchasing equipment for the near future.

How have you promoted your podcast?

Just like most independent podcasts, social media is key!

We’re on most of the major sites (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.). Just not Pinterest. None of us have enough Y chromosome in us to figure that one out.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Two major things: How much time it takes to put an episode together from “cradle to grave”, and how to keep growing and innovating without losing who you are in the process.

About six months in, we really focused exclusively on what WE enjoyed doing, and constantly work to make that better. Things fell in place from there. If you’re not enjoying it or it becomes a bother, you’re probably doing it wrong.

What could be better than listening to a podcast where they guys producing it are enjoying themselves, love to podcast and has super fast segments that make fun of the less serious side of news and hot topics? Well then….you do need to subscribe!

If you’ve been thinking of starting a podcast, do reach out to us! We’d love to take the confusion off of where you store your media!
