Q & A with Mark Dowding from Oh Beep! A Geocaching Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

We started podcasting in October 2013.

Why did you start podcasting?

It was something I’d been considering doing for a long time.  I was fascinated by it all.  Our show is about Geocaching and I listen to all of the English language podcasts relating to Geocaching.

One of these podcasts is GeoGearHeads, by DarrylW4 and The Bad Cop. Rob Walch was a guest on their show about The History of Podcasting.

That was the tipping point.

I got the kids involved because I thought it would be interesting for them, also because children aren’t represented enough on podcasts about Geocaching.  The kids are really the main hosts, I just “guide” them.

What’s your show about?

Our show Oh Beep! is about Geocaching – the obsession where people use million dollar satellites to find tupperware in the woods.  Its a weekly show, released on Sundays.

Its a very light hearted show, we like to have a laugh.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

We started off with a very cheap, non-branded, USB mic plugged in to a laptop.  I did the usual thing of trying to do it on the cheap.

That was a mistake.

On our first couple of shows, you can hardly hear Sophie.  That lasted for 4 episodes – actually, for two of the four, I’d not turned the mic on so we were using the laptops mic (I made ALL the rookie errors).

With the help of DarrylW4 and a bit more research, I upgraded to a Behringer Xenyx x1204 mixer and Behringer XM8500 mics.

We were initially recording straight in to Audacity.  Recently we’ve upgraded with a Zoom H4n for recording on to.  Its also enables us to record while out and about.  The kids love the roving reporter feel of it.

How have you promoted your podcast?

DarrylW4 has been a great help in promoting us, just one mention from him on Google+ got us on the front page of Google search.

We also had great help and support from Hikerjamz, who does another geocaching related podcast.  He interviewed us on his show and gives us a mention now and again.

We’ve also had Darryl and James on our show, that convinced me that we needed to do at least one interview a month.  Those interviews add a great dimension to the podcast.

I try to promote as much as possible via Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

Its been a steep learning curve. I don’t want to be sell, sell, sell.

Its far more rewarding and interesting when you get to know people and can have a conversation with them – I’d like to think those relationships last even if we pod fade.

We also have our own website, which gives people a hub to grab our content and connect to our social networks.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I’d taken my time.

Learned the ropes.

I was too rushed and inpatient to record and release. I’d gone down the “free” route and it cost us in the long run.

We didn’t have control of our feed, our audio sounded terrible.  But, had we not started so quickly we might have still been planning.
