Q & A with Rick Mulready from the Inside Social Media Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I launched The Inside Social Media Podcast on April 8, 2013

Why did you start podcasting?

My friends in the online space who had successful podcasts already had been pushing me for a while to do a show.  I laughed at them because I knew nothing about audio, was intimidated about being behind the mic and I HATE hearing my own voice on any kind of media (ewe, no no no).

I finally gave in and considered it.  I came up with an angle, format and frequency and watched Pat Flynn’s free podcasting tutorial to get started.  I ordered the equipment he recommended and recorded an intro.

I then sent it to those same people who had been encouraging me to start to get their opinion.  They loved it!  And they even said I had an “awesome” media voice.  Ha, I was off and running.

What’s your show about?

I interview heads of social media (and social media “influencers”) from the most successful brands in the world.

With the show, I promote the innovative and successful strategies these big brands are using on social media and then how small businesses can learn from and model their success.

My vision is that small business can then learn from these stories and insights and have their own success while working within their often minimal (or no) budgets.

My goal is to be promoting the brands and people that I’m talking with while helping small businesses.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Ah, I love getting all geeky with this…

  • Audio Technica
  • ATR–2100 mic
  • Heil PLT2 boom arm with shock mount
  • Xenyx 1002FX’ Behringer USB digital converter which connects my mixer to my MacBook Pro

I’ve done 22 shows now without a pop filter, but I’m now adding one.

  • I record using Skype’s Call Recorder (ecamm)
  • GarageBand to produce and edit (although, currently switching to Audacity)
  • Levelator to even out the audio

How have you promoted your podcast?

I basically talk about it whenever I’m talking with anyone in the business world.  Whenever it’s relevant, I mention it when meeting people in person.

I promote it via social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+) each week.  I’m fortunate that my guests often promote it via Twitter.

I write about each show on my site and I also have it listed in the author bylines when I write for sites like  Entrepreneur.com and Socialmediaexaminer.com.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Oh man, well, two things.  First, everyone says when you launch a show that your first 10 shows are going to suck.  That you find your rhythm and voice in shows 11–15 and then you’re off and running.

I’d been told this but I didn’t really take it to heart.  Boy, is it true.  I felt a huge difference in my comfort level about 10 shows in.

Second, I wish I knew more about audio quality and the need to have a basic understanding for editing your shows.

I’m just learning now how to improve the audio quality of my shows, and I’ve done 29 shows.  And, I think the audio quality is good.

But I’ve learned it can be better with a basic understanding of how to manipulate the audio.  Huge lesson I wish I knew 29 shows ago.
