Q & A with Wade Wingler from The Indy Vegan Family Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

We just started Indy Vegan Family in February when my doctor told me that I had to change to a vegan diet, but we have been podcasting on other shows for a couple of years prior to that.

Why did you start podcasting?

When my doctor told me to change my diet to all plants, no meat, no dairy and no eggs, to better control my diabetes it meant a lifestyle change for our whole family.

During the first few days we realized that we could share our journey and what we were learning with others.  We started a blog right away and recorded our first podcast episode a few weeks later.

What’s your show about?

We live in the Indianapolis area, are a family of five and are in the process of shifting to a totally vegan lifestyle.  We include recipes, reviews of restaurants and cookbooks and plenty of insight into how this dietary change extends into other areas of our lives.

Our kids range in age from 16 years to 6 months old and veganism is a totally different experience at each age and developmental stage.

In fact, our picky teenager refuses to be vegan but at least tries new recipes.  Her perspective in an otherwise vegan household is angsty and interesting for sure!

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

We use a Heil PR–20 microphone with a Roland R–05 recorder.  The production is done in Adobe Audition and we host with Libsyn.  Our blog is a WordPress site hosted on BlueHost.

How have you promoted your podcast?

Our entire family contributes to the show so we all work on promotion.  (At least the ones old enough to use the computer!)

We promote via Facebook, Twitter, cross-promotion with other food bloggers, cross-promotion with the restaurants we review and we’re planning to cover an upcoming national Veg-Fest event that will result in some significant exposure.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Set up a production schedule that you can deal with and stick to it.

Don’t over-extend yourself and burn out.

If you’re not loving your own show, others won’t either.

We realized from a previous show that a weekly podcast from us was too much.  Indy Vegan Family is a monthly show, but we plan to throw in some bonus episodes from time to time.

If you’ve recently stepped into the vegan world or are simply interested in it, then absolutely subscribe to the podcast and follow @IndyVeganFamily.
