Q & A with Kris from the No Extra Words Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

May 2015

Why did you start podcasting?

The short answer is because I didn’t want to become a blogger.

I was reading an article in “Poets and Writers” magazine and one nugget of advice was “put something out there every week.”

I loved the idea that in the 21st century anyone can be a content creator, and I’ve always loved podcasts as a listener, so I got inspired to start my own show.

What’s your show about?

It’s a short fiction show, so we broadcast short short stories. Most are under 1,000 words and many are shorter than that.

Our shortest story to date was 6 words long. I air some of my own fiction but most of it is the work of other writers, writers from all over the world.

I love giving them this platform to share their work.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Simple and cheap.

I treated myself to a Blue Snowball mic and a $15 pop filter, as far as gear that is really it.

I use a desktop computer my husband built for me, record and edit in Audacity.

I use a free WordPress site for my website. Everything I’ve done has been with trial and error and the occasional Google search.

How have you promoted your podcast?

I’ve worked hard to be part of the author community on Twitter.

I made myself send the link to every Facebook friend I had, which was most definitely outside my comfort zone.

I had business cards made but so far the in-person marketing opportunities have been limited.

I post calls for submissions for authors to send their work, which has helped, and I make it easy for contributors to share the episode they are featured in.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

How supportive people would be.

I still feel like an imposter a lot of times, like oh I’m not “really” a good literary market, I’m too small to ask a “real” company to sponsor the show, etc.

The nice thing about this medium is if you’re willing to put the work in, you don’t have to be rich or famous or known to be part of the world of podcasting. You just have to do it.
