Q & A with Corey and Jessica from The Podcast Producers

When did you start podcasting?

Corey – I started podcasting in 2005 with an independent music podcast.

Jessica – I launched my first podcast on October 1, 2014.

Why did you start podcasting?

Corey – I was a studio musician and radio advertisement producer at the time.

I was also bit of a computer geek and follower of Leo Laporte’s shows on TV and radio.

When I heard that he had a podcast I quickly fell in love with the medium.

In about 2006, when iTunes incorporated podcasting into its application, I saw the potential for independent artists and voices to be heard.

Jessica – I started my podcast after reading Jared Easley’s book, Podcasting Good to Great and after attending Podcast Movement.

I was inspired by how much collaboration and relationship-building opportunities existed when you have a podcast! I also saw it as a great way to continue marketing my business.

What’s your show about?

The Podcast Producers is a 10-part audio series focusing on subjects related to the art and business of podcasting.

Hosts Jessica Rhodes and Corey Coates bring a polished, journalistic, audio experience to present a multifaceted insight into the world of podcasting and the personalities who produce them.

Season One explores topics including: Podcasting for fun or business, the podcast community, statistics and demographics, advertising in podcasts, podcast networks, the psychology of podcasting, how to podcast, the reaction of broadcast radio, and much more.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Corey – I’m currently working with a Shure SM7B on a Heil boom stand, into a DBX286s processor and converted to my Macbook Pro via the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.

Recording and post-production are done in Adobe Audition CS6 and Skype calls are recorded with eCamm call recorder.

Jessica – I currently use an ATR 2100 mic and I record calls on Skype. I have an iMac and use Ecamm call recorder.

How have you promoted your podcast?

We did a lot of social media promotion and relied partly on the participation of our guests to share the program.

We are now beginning to start a second marketing wave to target podcasters specifically who already listen to podcast-centric programs.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Jessica Rhodes and I had to place narrations in the fourth stage of post-production editing.

The ideal would have been to spend a few days physically together in an editing environment to script and voice track our parts of the show. Perhaps in Season Two!
