Q & A with Scott from Assembly of Geeks
When did you start podcasting?
I launched my first podcast (The Critic Show) back in 2011.
I had produced content for radio, but it was my first venture into podcasting & hosting a show.
I wanted it to be a listener-driven opinion show centered primarily around movies & TV. I also hoped to get a celebrity guest on occasion, if possible.
Eventually two things happened…I learned my concept was flawed for several reasons (including too broad of a theme) and I started to get guests on every show (by the way, a new show aired twice a month).
As each month passed, I made improvements to the show, including adding more voices & creative segments. I’ve heard podcast experts talk about how you may want to produce your first few shows but not post them.
Instead, post show #10 or so, because in all likelihood, a lot is going to change. That was true for me. By my 7th episode, it was a whole different show.
Later, I went back and deleted my first 6 episodes because they were so different from Episode 7 and on.
In 2012, I realized The Critic Show was not a good name anymore and my program had become a movies/TV discussion and interview show. So, I renamed it Beyond the Screens.
I still managed to get plenty of guests, but continued to experiment a lot with segments and felt I needed to narrow the focus even more. I noticed many of my guests and topics were geek related, so I ended Beyond the Screens and launched Assembly of Geeks in September of 2013.
I knew there were a lot of geek talk shows out there and I wanted to do something that would make my show stand out. So, I had this creative vision of the hosts, listeners and guests all converging on a Hall of Justice-like fortress to discuss what’s happening in the geek world.
I then thought if I went that route…I needed to take the Hall of Justice inspiration even further…like have a narrator start the show and have some sort of action or story play out as each episode began.
I then thought it would be fun to have a fictional character get involved in the action and discussion. So, I created GANNIN – The Geek and Nerd News And Intel Network – he’s like Jarvis from Iron Man.
Unlike The Critic Show/Beyond the Screens, little has changed about AoG since it’s launch. It’s going strong and we just added a podcast dedicated to the TV series, Agent Carter (complete with 1940’s music and radio spots).

Why did you start podcasting?
In 2011, I was job searching and needed a creative outlet. My wife suggested I create a podcast. I was really good at producing content for radio, so it made a lot of sense to give it a go.
What’s your show about?
We discuss all things geek – movies, TV shows, comics, cosplay, rumors, nostalgia, etc.
What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.
I use a $70 mic I found at Target – it’s the Samson Q2U USB mic.
I record the show with 2 other hosts via Skype and Evaer. I edit on Audacity and Sony Sound Forge. Here I am explaining it all in a video:

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?
Probably the rule listed above about producing a few shows before you post the first one.
