Q & A with Stacey Harris from Hit The Mic

When did you start podcasting?

I launched my show in November of 2013, after way too much thinking about it.

Why did you start podcasting?

I started Hit The Mic with Stacey Harris mostly because I hate writing content. I’ll be honest blog posts are tough!

My background is actually audio engineering so the idea of doing audio came pretty naturally to me. I also am a much better speaker than I am writer so it was pretty selfish, but it’s actually been really incredible because the connection to my community is a lot deeper.

What’s your show about?

I talk about online marketing and online business.

We occasionally sprinkle in a bit more random stuff that serve online entrepreneurs like fitness and dealing with stress but the main focus is marketing and business growth.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Hardware wise I keep it pretty simple.

I use a Samson Meteor Mic recording directly into my iMac.

I record and edit using GarageBand which I really love.

I manage my show notes, guest info, and show ideas using Trello.

I like the story board kind of feel, it keeps me organized and since I record guest interviews as much as 30–45 days in advanced it’s nice to have that info together come editing time.

I host with Libsyn of course which I totally recommend. I LOVE the advanced stats. My website is WordPress based so I just pull my download URL into the PowerPress Plugin to make it available on my website.

It really can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. That’s one of the biggest things I tell people when they are considering starting a show.

How have you promoted your podcast?

When I launched I focused on my community to help me spread the word (and they delivered big time).

I use the normal routes of social media as well.

I also try and talk about it as often as possible. One of the valuable pieces of having really fabulous guests is that they also promote the show and that helps the audience grow.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I knew how much fun it would be, I probably would have started a lot earlier.
