Q & A with John Parker from The Dance Music Consultant Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

I wanted to start back in 2006 but instead decided to get into Internet Radio. I still have 2 internet stations but had some time to get podcasting in. I started my show on September 25th, 2013.

Why did you start podcasting?

I started doing the Dance Music Consultant podcast because I see so much mis-information about how you have to do certain things to succeed in the music business. I’ve worked in the music biz since 1984, although my first paycheck wasn’t until 1989.

I’ve signed multi-platinum acts and have even sold 1.5 million albums as a mix dj. I can point people in the right direction. I hate seeing people being taken advantage of by some of the vultures that circle this business. So I fight them off by putting the truth out there.

What’s your show about?

The Dance Music Consultant is about the wonderful world of the dance music business. I talk about the top news stories of the week, do interviews with some of the top business people in dance music and I also give the listeners my pick hit song of the week. The podcast is about educating those that are interested in the music business.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

My podcasting setup consists of:

  • AkG Perception 200 mic
  • Blue Yeti Mic
  • Denon DN X–800 Mixer
  • Behringer Composer Pro-XL MDX2600
  • Roland R–05 Digital Recorder
  • Dell Laptop with:
  • Audacity
  • Mp3 Gain
  • iPad for Skype
  • iPhone 4s for phoners

How have you promoted your podcast?

I promote my podcast via social media. Be it Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or Google+, I let my followers know that not only is there a new show but I give them the direct link so they can download or stream it without going into iTunes. Seems a lot of people prefer not to go into other directories just to listen.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Still too early for me to answer this but I know that I’m constantly tinkering to try and get the best sound quality for my phoners. If there was one think that I wish there was a proper manual for it would be that!
