Q & A with Yolande from the Talking Heels Podcast

When did you start podcasting?

Officially, we started in October 2012 but the idea had been sizzling beneath the surface for about 4 years prior.

Why did you start podcasting?

My cousin, Aldith, and I are always getting into long tirades about art, music, films and pop culture, so we decided to let others in on the fun.

Sam joined the team to balance and bring meditative wisdom between the polar opposite prim, proper, optimist (Aldith) and the geeky, judgmental, realist (me).

What’s your show about?

The Talking Heels are three, well-traveled, Caribbean women (all with fine arts backgrounds) debating life, love, and how much to assimilate into American culture over food and cocktails.

We all have large families and fascinating friends, so people are constantly stopping by to add a little more spice to the conversation.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

We are super-low fidelity at this point but planning to upgrade once we hit episode 85. Yeah goals!

Right now, we record using a “Yeti USB Microphone”  and record/edit in GarageBand, Tag with ID3 Editor, and upload to a WordPress site using the PowerPress Plugin.

It works for now because who has time to mess with cords/gadgets while juggling a plate of akee, salt-fish, yam & dumplings. :o)

How have you promoted your podcast?

Mostly, word of mouth.  We attend numerous art and music events in Atlanta, GA and promote the podcast while there. We recently started producing Facebook/Twitter commentary consistently, so those connections are still forming.

Right now, our philosophy is to split the promotion between the hosts.  Aldith loves shopping, funny/provocative celebrity gossip, and minority arts, so people engaging with us on Facebook will enjoy those types of stories.

Sam is spreading spiritual questions over the twitter airwaves, while I handle getting the show out through the more traditional marketing channels (banner/graphic content, contributing to other blogs/etc. I tend to prefer a glass wall with my engagement (…only half-kidding).

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

I wish I realized how important it is to find the podcasting community in your area. Even though I try to listen to everything I can, there are not enough hours in my day.  Nothing is more powerful than the opportunity to bounce ideas/practices off like minded people face-to-face.

Great discussion about art, film, music and pop culture by passionate and intelligent people with yummy food and drinks? Yes, it’s time for you to subscribe!

You can also connect with Talking Heels via twitter and facebook.

This powerhouse crew will in fact be offering some amazing premium content for their podcast!

The “Brown Sands Yoga”  and “MiniHeels Cooking” premium content segments will be a part of the podcast app launch (expected late-December).
Sam is an ex-yoga instructor and she will be leading “Brown Sands,” which are quick videos full of techniques people can use to calm. center, and focus on themselves despite their crazy, hectic lives.

“MiniHeels Cooking” will be a video series where Aldith’s two young girls, Remi & Raven, attempt to cook the dishes they enjoy during their podcast recording.

They plan to start monthly sessions in January 2014 and will feature easy to follow recipes but always with an island twist.

If you have some friends and you’ve got some high class conversation going on, you really must let the world in on it and we’d be glad to help you! Let us host your podcast!
