Q & A with Ben Greenfield (and Brock) from Ben Greenfield Fitness

When did you start podcasting?

In 2008 I actually started a video podcast! I did 4 episodes, decided I didn’t like how messy my hair looked and the fact I had to get dressed prior to recording, so I switched to audio.

Why did you start podcasting?

To tell people about exciting new things I was finding in all the fitness and nutrition magazines and journals getting sent to my house. I love to teach, and wanted to simply interpret geeky articles and share them with other fitness enthusiasts!

What’s your show about?

Ben Greenfield Fitness has the latest health, fitness and multi-sport research, non run-of-the-mill interviews with exercise and medicine professionals, and new cutting-edge content from the top personal trainer and wellness coach in the nation. Exercise, eat, swim, bike, run and live better.

What’s your podcasting set-up? Hardware, software, CMS, etc.

Brock (the mighty podcast sidekick) probably has much to add here. I personally use a Rode podcaster mic, and then use Expersis Call Recorder for Skype for recording interviews.

From Brock:

We both use OS10.8 Macs but when I first joined the show, I was on a Windows7 Dell.

We record the show as a “double-ender”. Ben records his side and DropBoxes it to me as an mov file.

I record mine with AAC compression and then I match them up for the final product.

I prefer this process, even though it takes longer to edit, because it gets rid of the mess that Skype can make during our conversation.

I use Audacity and/or Sound Forge Pro to do the mixing of our tracks, the commercials, the sound effects, and the listener’s call-in questions.

I use the Lame Codec to compress to mp3 (usually 80bps). I often run the finished AIFF through Levelator along the way too.

I have a Rode Podcaster on order… but up until that arrives, I have been using (for nearly 2 years now) a Microsoft LifeChat LX–3000 headset/mic on my end… which means I have to spend some time “prettying up” my voice each week.

Hope that is interesting to someone.

How have you promoted your podcast?

  • Tons of written blog content and guest articles on as many sites as possible, including Huffington Post, FoxNews, AskMen, etc.
  • Appearing as guests on other’s podcasts
  • Using social media retweets and shares and our BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love page
  • Using BenIsLive.com when I’m speaking at events
  • Giving away prizes to reviews on iTunes

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started?

Don’t talk about what you think people might be interested. Ask your audience about what keeps them up at night, what their biggest problems are, and what their perfect day would look like. Then make content that gives them a solution.
